Canβt wait to be able to use the Thai cookbook you and Pim will produce. I expect it will be like all your other books: recipes clearly written and (mostly) cook-able with easily obtained ingredients.
I so look forward to your new cookbook, as I do all of your work, and a huge "Yes, Please!" to an online chat focused on your thoughts and recommendations regarding visiting Vietnam. In the meantime, wishing you safe travels for the remainder of your journey.
And my husband and I are interested in visiting Vietnam soon, while we can still travel. (Probably not until the end of 2025 or early 2026.) We donβt speak or read Vietnamese, but Google Translate has made it so easy to have meaningful conversations with folks (and figure out signage and menus!).
We used it in Japan and it was tremendously helpful. I had a long βconversationβ with a Japanese woman in an art exhibit-I typed what I wanted to say into Google translate, showed her the Japanese (which I hoped was a good translation), and she answered through her own version of Google translate. It was immensely satisfying!
Congratulation on your JB nomination winning without winning, I always enjoy your articles and your perspective as there is something comforting and informative about how you express! My husband has been talking about visiting Vietnam later this year and wants to head to Hanoi (although he was born in Saigon) - thanks for your restaurant and cafe tips!
I snagged a last-minute ticket to the awards last night and had my fingers crossed that I'd get to meet you there. Congrats again on the nomination! And the "win" of writing a book with Pim, I cannot wait to dive into that one. Enjoy the travels!
Meeting you would have been icing on the cake, Martin! I regret not being there to celebrate everyoneβs success. The travels have been quite a trip this time.
This is so exciting! Back in the heyday of blogging I followed you, Pim and David Lebowitz! Iβm lucky enough to be able to go to Kin Kao every now and then because Iβm local, and I read your and Davidβs Substack newsletters. Iβm looking forward to hearing Pimβs thoughts again, and thrilled that you get to be collaborating on the project!
Oh my goodness! This is incredibly wonderful. Iβm thrilled to be doing work thatβs meaningful to you and many others. Thanks for adding wind to Pim and my sails.
I'm very excited about the new cookbook and looking forward to hearing more about your travels and collaborative work. I always mention your name and your recipes & cookbooks to family and friends when we're discussing anything about clear instructions and the fun of learning new skills and flavors!

Your trip sounds fabulous! Happy eating!
Weβre making sensible recipes that are cookable!
Canβt wait until itβs done and put in the world!

Travel is fun but often times, also work.

Iβve wondered about using Google translate for travelers! Good tip, Mary!

The news about you and Pim is fantastic. Your trip sounds amazing. Kudos to you for all of your successes.
Thank you for your kindness and support, Melissa!
