Charleston: Folly Beach - Bowen's Island for a dive bar and oysters. It's the most magical to catch a sunset there - go early enough to get a seat outside, Melfi's/Leon's Oyster Shop if you can get a reservation, I always try to go to Harken for coffee and a pastry in the French District and if you can schedule a Walk and Talk Charleston tour with Tyler its a wonderful history tour! We like to beach in Sullivan's Island. Love it there.
Your cookbook just arrived! I'll post after I make the vegan bologna. I'm using parchment paper as I can't justify buying 200 banana leaves on amazon when I only need 2 or 3!
This isn't very local to either Charleston or Raleigh, but Saturday, Oct. 26 is the date for the 40th annual Lexington (NC) Barbecue Festival. It's a couple of hours west of Raleigh. And Lexington-style 'cue is the only 'cue for me!
Durham has Li Ming's Global market. I love this place for grocery shopping! I can't say that Raleigh or Durham are shining examples of foodie havens. Just say'n. Da Nang (Dragon Bridge, Night Market, seafood) was a fabulous place to visit and central to Hoi An, Ba Na Hills (Golden Bridge), and others. I found it more manageable to get around than Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
There's a similar kind of market to Li Ming's in a suburb outside of Raleigh. It's called Grand Asia and it was very Chinese. I see a Ktown and Oriental market too. The HMart in Cary is good I hear but I've been to Hmarts in many places.
Da Nang is definitely easy going compared to HCMC. The airport is good too.
Raleigh has an excellent food scene. Go to Poole’s Diner. Ashley Christensen is a fabulous chef. Brewery Bhavana is also amazing. For dessert or drinks try bittersweet. Escazu for local chocolate. Black and white coffee for the best local coffee. Enjoy!
For the Raleigh area, if you can come out to Durham, visit Saltbox Seafood Joint, Lady Gold Tacos, Cheeni, Little Bull, and Seraphine. It looks like the chefs from Cheeni and Little Bull will be presenting at the Symposium!

Theresa! Oh wow, we were wondering about Folly Beach. Thank you for these magnificent suggestions.

Anna! Excellent. You can use char leaves too. It's very pretty that way. But parchment is pefectly fine too! Look forward to your reactions.

Oh my, that's quite an endorsement for Lexington 'cue seeing as how there's quite a lot of good barbecue in your area. Wow! Thank you!

Poole's is a lot of fun. Brewery Bhavana has a nice vibe too. Thank you for all these Raleigh tips, Frances!!!

The folks from Saltbox were at SFA a couple years ago when we were in Oxford. Thank you for these tips to add to my Triangle know how, Jill!
Charleston: Chubby Fish, Lowland, Malagon, Southbound
