Thanks to your herb guide I have a garden full of plants rooted from my Vietnamese market that aren't available as seeds or seedlings in my area. It's a delicious and convenient reward during the Summer and Fall.

What do you have going in your garden? Rooting is awesome? I have mixed results. What are your tips?

I successfully rooted my favorite mint, Vietnamese perilla, red perilla, lemongrass, basil, Thai basil, and scallions. I keep them in water until the roots are at least 2-3 inches and then transplant into regular potting soil. I keep them inside by a South facing window and then harden them off outside in the shade for a few days. In the South, it can get hot and steamy very quickly so I bring them back in at midday until they start to take off. I've used rooting hormone before and it does seem to increase the success rate.

Becky! Thanks for the details on your cultivating process. I never think of hardening the rooting process but it totally works! I’m with you on the rooting hormone. Sometimes it helps sometimes not!

Black April. Every April for the last 50 years has been gut wrenching, and it always will be. I’m pleased to see the 405 renamed in Westminster to celebrate the extraordinary resilience of the Vietnamese who came here fleeing the end of a tragic war—so much death and destruction that continues to affect lives both here and in Southeast Asia today, thanks to herbicides, unexploded ordnance, and PTSD. There is a named section of 101 in Redwood City (between Willow Road and Hillsdale Ave), the Civilian Women Volunteers All Wars Memorial Freeway. It was spearheaded by Maureen Nerli, who served in Vietnam with the USO and championed by many other civilian women who served with Red Cross, Army Special Services, USAID, among others in Vietnam. It is Black April for all of us.

The 1970s and Vietnam War was pivotal in changes in the US and elsewhere. What’s going on now politically and socially was seeded in the pain and disappointment of that time. That said, I am glad it was cause for us to come to America.
