The Japanese beat the Colonel at his own game. Wow.

That was the thing that got me, too! So... Colonel Sanders was so disappointed by how American franchises prepared his food that he opened a competing restaurant in Kentucky on former KFC headquarters. Claudia Sanders Dinner House remains. The About page has the history but sorta lacks the Colonel's fire. https://claudiasandersshelbyville.com/

Thank you for explaining the history of KFC + XMAS. Living in Oceanside, we’ve had many Marine neighbors and friends who can attest to the tradition. The cookbook Love Japan certainly sounds intriguing. I notice that the karaage recipe is only fried once, is that because the pieces are smaller than other fried chicken recipes?

I grew up as an only child with divorced parents and didn’t have a traditional meal. My own family has fluctuated between tamales and mezze and everything in between. This year my Mexican MIL is hosting and ordering tamales. My contributions will be “the good chicharrones” and a Mexican inspired relish tray (jicama, radish, cucumber, limes, mango, Tajín).

What are the Marine neighbors having for the holidays???? I wanna know... Or you can offer them karaage now! Yes to the need to just fry once. The coating is very light and the pieces are small. I really think it's the egg that makes a difference. I've fried chicken twice but the pieces were bigger and the coating was heavier.

Your loose, cross-cultural Christmas sound awesome. After the rigors of Thanksgiving menus, everyone needs a break to do as they please at Christmas! There's enough stress.

No current Marine neighbors. Some friends now in North Carolina are on vacay in Iceland, so I can only imagine their meal!

Why is it so hard to find great chicken karaage at restaurants when it’s pretty easy to make at home? I’ll definitely try this recipe. Fried chicken is better than roasted turkey any day. Heck, roasted chicken is better than turkey any day.

I’m not sure aside from the fact that simple food is hard to consistently make. I dunno, but the the first time out with this recipe, the chicken was 💯. Reheated nicely too.

We just had stringy chicken pho last night and a Viet “egg roll” that contained oddly flavored precooked filling. We left half the order uneaten.

This is why we cook, yes?!!! Happy holidays!
