You’re too kind, Susan! Marion’s March 21 blog is linked above. Sorry I didn’t make it more obvious. :-/ She’s goes to the heart of the matter in her MN way.
Jolene — what a career you’ve had in food. I love how you have worked in so many facets of the industry. That’s how you have such rich, long-term perspectives. And, your pro food experiences included MN too. That’s extra awesome. Icing on da cake, lady!
How exciting to see you in a photo with Marion Nestle! Not only does she have a cool name :), but she is one of my heroes. I love when you quote your Mom--I also do what she does-eat something sweet as part of the meal. I think Asians have known for a very long time what leads to longevity and good health--grains, greens, soy, fermented foods, and tea! Question for you: Do you drink much tea yourself? I am loving the Lotus tea you recommended a few months ago.
Marion Nestle does have a cool name — and you do too! Heheheh. There’s so much to explore in Asian cuisines for tasty healthful eating. I only know some of it and keep learning more.
Tea — yes! I start my day with caffeinated tea (right now it’s a Hmong tea), enjoy herbal tea in the afternoon and more herbal tea as a sleepy time nightcap. The Viet lotus tea is so intriguing! I’m so glad you enjoy it, Marion!
Such an interesting post! I’m only recently aware of Marion Nestle, and the only book of hers I’ve read is her most recent (Slow Cooked). I’ve wanted to read What to Eat, and thought too late that I should’ve read it before this Thursday. The good thing about the MIND and CMIND “diets” is that it’s all super delicious.
My father seems to eat like your mom, lots of black beans, veg, and some protein. He’s 81 and still running marathons. For lunch today I’m having a salad that has been in my fridge for a few days (farro/garbanzos/cucumber/red onion/dill/purple daikon/lemon & olive oil vinaigrette). Not even trying to eat healthy, it’s just easy and good!
I often wonder how much joy takes precedence over the “perfect” diet. I don’t count how many servings of healthy stuff I eat, but I also laugh out loud with my family and friends every day. I don’t go to the gym, but I go for long walks when I’m up to it. I guess my musings are a result of seeing how people shop every day as well as living with a chronic health condition.
Talk about fan-girling, seeing Marion Nestle and Andrea Nguyen together would about do me in! 😉
Great discussion, following right behind the last one on “later in Life.” I’ll find the Marion Nestle blog post and dive in there, as well

I had the pleasure of meeting Marion when I worked at a cooking school in NYC and she is remarkable! Thanks, Andrea!

Oh may I ask where you get your Hmong tea? 🙏I know that you know what’s authentic. I am still swooning over the Lotus tea ☺️

Your dad running 26+ miles is astounding. WOW.
The dream is to eat healthily without trying. Right on, Emily.
And, looking forward to your sharing Trader Joe’s insights this coming week. Thanks for that!
